World Drug Day

LHRO’s Participation in World Drug Day — Arusha, 2023

On June 26, 2023, LHRO joined the global observance of World Drug Day in Arusha, alongside government officials, civil society organizations, local youth groups, and community members. The day’s theme underscored the urgent need to prevent drug abuse and strengthen community awareness.

Key Activities:

  • Awareness Workshops: LHRO hosted interactive sessions in schools and community centres, educating youth about the physical, psychological, and social risks of drug abuse.

  • Community Dialogue: Representatives from LHRO facilitated a public forum where parents, guardians, local leaders, and people with lived experience shared stories, challenges, and strategies for prevention and recovery.

  • Exhibition / Information Booth: LHRO set up a booth in a public area to distribute educational materials (leaflets, posters) and engage passersby in conversations about addiction, treatment, and support services.

  • Partnerships and Advocacy: Coordination with local hospitals, law enforcement, youth organizations, and municipal authorities helped amplify LHRO’s message. LHRO proposed or reinforced calls for better access to rehabilitation and mental health services in the region.

Key Messages:

  • The importance of prevention over punishment, focusing on early education and community support.

  • Reducing stigma around substance use, encouraging people to seek help without shame.

  • Need for stronger youth engagement, so that young people become agents of awareness in their own communities.

Outcomes and Impact:

  • Hundreds of young people and community members reached through schools, forums, and public gatherings.

  • Media coverage (radio, local news) helped spread the awareness messages more broadly.

  • Stronger collaboration between LHRO and stakeholders in local government, health, and social services, with commitments for follow-up programs.
